Could you push yourself out of your comfort zone to help SYC?

There are lots of exciting active challenges locally to get involved with! It’s time to get your running shoes on and pound the pavements to raise vital funds for our work.

We can’t tell you how much we appreciate everyone who takes on a challenge event for SYC: it really is a great way to support our work. We know challenges like this can be tough, that’s why we are on hand to provide fundraising materials, advice and tonnes of support to get you across that finish line!!

Every penny raised makes a huge difference to the lives of the young people and families we support.

The Sheffield Half Marathon 2025 - Perhaps the most well-known of all the local challenge events, the Sheffield Half is always a brilliant event. For those entering, it’s just over 13 miles of running, with the chance to take in some of Sheffield’s and the Peak District’s best views along the way. Whether you choose to go it alone (some even do it in fancy dress!) or with a team of mates, the Sheffield Half Marathon is always an experience. Date: Sunday 23rd 2025; sign up here.

The Sheffield 10k 2025 - If a half marathon seems a bit daunting, there is always the option to get involved with the ever popular Sheffield 10k. A little over 6 miles, the 10k is a great opportunity for runners of all abilities! SYC have a limited amount of charity places for this year’s 10k, so please do get in touch quickly if you’d like to take the 10k on to raise vital funds for us. Contact our Fundraising Team here. The race takes place on Sunday 28th September 2025; sign up here.

The Sheffield TEN10TEN - This multi-terrain 10K trail attracts over 1000 entrants yearly and starts in the stunning Endcliffe Park. Runners twist and turn through this exciting course, which takes place on four different types of terrain: grass; pavements; road; and woodlands. This is a great option for less experienced runners and those starting their running journey, as well as for the seasoned pros. There is also a 2.5K fun run for anyone aged 4 upwards, making this a great event for families of runners too! Dates for the 2025 event are yet to be released, but make sure to keep an eye on their website if you’re interested. More information can be found here.

The Peak District Challenge 2024 - The Peak District Challenge gives keen walkers and runners the perfect chance to take in some stunning views whilst completing their challenge. There are lots of different categories you can enter too, ranging from a 10K night run to a 100K 24-hour challenge! These challenges are definitely suited to those with running and walking experience. There currently aren’t any dates for 2025, but make sure to keep an eye on their website if you’re interested. We are an offical partner charity of the Peak District Challenge, so if you are considering taking one of the distances on, please do contact our Fundraising Team here.

The Edale Skyline - 20 miles long and 1,200 metres of ascent, with an approximate ten-hour completion time. The Edale Skyline challenge is certainly no walk in the park but it is an enticing, tough but do-able challenge that is a great introduction to long distance walking. At the end you will be nicely shattered but elated nonetheless. Along the way there will be stunning views, plus you’ll be led by an experienced and knowledgeable mountain leader the entire time. Not only will it be a surreal experience, it’s a great way to raise some money for SYC. Multiple dates are available for 2025, but be quick, some days are already fully booked!

Tough Mudder - If you are more of an obstacle course fan, then this is the perfect challenge event for you (if you don’t mind getting a little bit muddy, of course!). The Tough Mudder is a mixed running and obstacle course, which challenges endurance, strength and speed all in one. There’s two distances to choose from, either a 5k distance with 12 obstacles, or a 15k distance with over 20 obstacles for the hardcore participants! Tough Mudders take place every year throughout the Summer, up until the beginning of October. The Yorkshire events take place on 26th/27th of July 2025 at Broughton Hall Estate, with other venues and locations available. Visit the Tough Mudder website here.

Born Survivor - Another one for the obstacle course/mud lovers, Born Survivor will really test not only your ability to complete the course, but your grit and determination too (and potentially your washing machine to clean the muddy kit afterwards!). Similar to Tough Mudder, this Royal Marine Commando inspired course can be an individual challenge, as well as a team one. The closest Born Survivor takes place in Gisburn (Ribble Valley), Lancashire on Saturday 13th of September 2025, and there are three different courses depending on your abilities/fitness level (6-8k with 18 obstacles, 10k with 30 obstacles and a 10k Elite course). Visit the Born Survivor website for more information.

The Great North Swim - For those of you who prefer to travel in water, rather than on foot, The Great North Swim is a fantastic, reasonably local challenge event that our staff team have previously taken part in! With different options depending on your swimming ability, as well as activities for family and friends to try out, this event really does have it all. This open water swimming event is hugely popular, with roughly 10,000 entrants taking part every year. There are also plenty of staff on the day to keep you safe, just in case you encounter any problems. Dates for the swim are the 13th/14th/15th of June 2025, with some time slots being more popular than others. See more about signing up for the Great North Swim here.

The Great North SwimRun - And for those who love challenging themselves both on foot and in the water, The Great North SwimRun could be perfect for you. You can take on one of three grueling courses, either on your own or with a partner, which include both swimming and running sections. The short course comes to 12.6k in total, whilst the longer course clocks in at 23.9k! Good planning comes into play with this challenge, as you have to carry everything you need along with you; you heard that right, even your running trainers are going in the water for the swimming sections - definitely not one for the faint hearted! Check out their website for more information and commonly asked questions, if you’re thinking of taking the plunge! Date: Saturday 14th June 2025.

This is not an exhaustive list of challenge events - there are plenty of other challenges out there not mentioned above. If you’ve seen a challenge event that you would like to enter to fundraise for SYC*, please get in touch with our Fundraising Team using the short form on our website. We may even be able to kit you out with one of our SYC t-shirts/vests, to wear during your training or on the big day!

*Please note that most of the challenge events above have entrance fees. We may be able to help cover some/all entrance fees, depending on sponsorship the fundraiser is able to achieve. We also occasionally receive free challenge event places we’re able to give to our supporters. Please contact us to find out more about entrance fees and any free places available.
