SYC’s e-learning module.
We have a free e-learning module ‘Young Carers: Identifying and supporting young people with caring responsibilities in Sheffield’.
This course is aimed at professionals working in Sheffield to help you better identify and support young people who have caring responsibilities. The course has been co-designed with young people from Sheffield Young Carers’ Action Group and is CPD accredited.
Learning outcomes: By the end of the course, you will be able to:
Explain why it is important to identify and support young carers
Outline young carers’ statutory rights and how these are met in Sheffield
Explain who young carers are and how caring responsibilities can impact on young people
Identify young carers more confidently in your work
Support young carers in your work, through signposting and practical resources
The course should take 60-90 minutes to complete, or a bit longer if you look at all the additional resources. It automatically saves as you work through it though, so you can do it in sections if you prefer. (NB: there is no save button - saving is automatic as you work through the course).

Multi-agency training
We also run three multi-agency courses per year:
Spring term 2025: Tuesday 11th March 1:30pm - 3:30pm
Safeguarding Workshop: Understanding Young Carers and Adult Carers Needs (interactive virtual session via Zoom).
Details of course: Many carers remain hidden, making it vital to identify and support them effectively. This workshop, delivered in partnership with Sheffield Carers Centre and Sheffield Children Safeguarding Partnership, will provide up-to-date information about the impacts of caring responsibilities on people of all ages, along with practical tips and resources to help you in your work. Post-16 providers! Supporting Sheffield-based young carers into Higher Education
In 2023, UCAS introduced a new section in the application so students can share more information about their circumstances with the university or college – including whether they have caring responsibilities.
On 8th November Sheffield Young Carers co-delivered their annual training session together with Sheffield Hallam University, the University of Sheffield, and Hepp (Higher Education Progression Partnership) and one young adult student carer who shares his experiences of entering HE. This presentation gives post-16 education staff:
An understanding of the impacts of unsupported caring on education and barriers to HE.
An understanding of the different kinds of pre-entry support available for young carers in Sheffield.
Practical steps you can take to support young carers to access this support, including university applications, with links to lots of support resources from UCAS.
