Last week was Carers Week! Join us in taking a look back at everything we got up to at SYC to celebrate Carers Week and put carers on the map.
Activity events - Thanks to the wonderful folk at the Yorkshire Sports Foundation, the Schools Sports Partnership, Sheffield City Trust, Greentop Circus, Onboard, Sheffield Sharks and the Sheffield Hatters, over 50 young carers across the city had the special opportunity to attend sports and wellbeing sessions during one of the most important awareness weeks for carers in the UK.
Both events were absolutely brilliant, allowing young people to try their hand at lots of exciting sports and activities, including boxing, football, table tennis, circus skills and scooting! Alongside these amazing activities, young people were able to explore important topics such as health and wellbeing for carers.
A spokesperson on behalf of Sheffield City Trust commented: "As a Leisure Trust, we pride ourselves on engaging and providing opportunities for all. The work conducted by Sheffield Young Carers is critical to those that they are there to serve, which makes partnering and supporting their efforts, one that we prioritise. Sheffield City Trust continues to work with partners, establishments and communities to make our facilities accessible to all. We were blown away by the enthusiasm and energy shown across the day, it was a pleasure to see and be involved in".
SYC sign the Young Carers Covenant - In March 2024, a new Young Carers Covenant was launched. It contains ten key changes that will improve young carers’ life chances and secure a fair future for all young carers and young adult carers.
At SYC, we worked with young people in our Action Group, our staff, and our trustees to think about all the actions we pledge to take. We released our commitments in the build up to Carers Week and now we’re encouraging others to sign the Covenant too!
You can see all of the actions we came up with here - click each outcome to see SYC’s pledges. Hopefully seeing what we’ve committed to will help give you some ideas for an action or two that you could take when you sign up!
Joint Training Webinar - On Tuesday, Helen, SYC’s Family Services Manager, delivered a joint training webinar alongside Sheffield Carers Centre to GP staff from across the city. The webinar, which was in partnership with Primary Care Sheffield, was around how practice staff can support adult and young carers and covered practical ways in which primary care can identify and support carers.
Carers Celebration event at Sheffield Town Hall - On Thursday, one of our team members, Newton, had the pleasure of attending the Sheffield Health and Social Care Trust’s carers celebration event. Newton picked up an award of appreciation for young carers and young adult carers across the city, which was handed out by Lord Mayor Jayne Dunn!
So that’s what we got up to during another special Carers Week. We want to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped make our celebrations so awesome! Also, a massive thank you to everybody who got involved in putting carers on the map - it’s really appreciated!
