How to get support

An assessment is a way for a young carer to get help to make their life and their caring easier.

All Young Carers Needs Assessments in Sheffield are carried out by the new Young Carers Needs Assessment Team (YCAT) within Sheffield City Council.

YCAT work to ensure that every young carer receives the right support and advice in line with statutory guidance. By centralising the process, the council aim to provide consistent, high-quality support for young carers and their families across Sheffield. This approach supports the principle of a whole-family assessment, helping to identify needs early and prevent inappropriate levels of caring responsibilities for children.

Once the YCAT have completed their assessment, they will refer the young carer on to support services to help them and their families. This might include a referral to us and/or to other services that can best meet their needs.

Referral process for young carers aged 8-17:

Since November last year, a Young Carers Needs Assessment needs to be offered to all young carers aged under 18 before they can access our service.

Young carers aged under 18 are entitled to a Young Carers Needs Assessment. This is a way to make sure young carers and their families get the support that they need. This support might come from our service, but other services might be able to offer useful support too.

Once the Young Carers Assessment Team completes their assessment, if the young carer meets our criteria, they will refer on to us. They will also be able to access other support services for the young carer and their family.
