How we help young people

A place to find help, take a break, and connect with others who get it.

If you're a young person in Sheffield helping to care for someone, or affected by drug or alcohol issues in your family, this is your space. We provide a break, help you build your confidence, and help you find the support you deserve.

Who we support

Our support is for young people aged 8-25 living in Sheffield who are:

  • A young carer (you help look after a family member who is ill, disabled, or has mental health issues).
  • Affected by a family member's drug or alcohol use, now or in the past.

You can find more information about who young carers are, here.

Please note: Due to high demand, there is currently a waiting list of approximately five months (unless a condition is terminal). Need urgent support?

What to expect. Your year with SYC.

A year of support, designed for you.

First of all, an SYC support worker will arrange a home visit or phone call to meet you and your family and tell you more about what we do.

Next, we'll offer:

An invite to access up to 6 one to one sessions with one of our workers. You can talk about your worries, we will listen and try to help as much as we can. These sessions are confidential and are tailored to you and your needs, because every young carer is unique.

An invite to access groups with young people that are a similar age to you. Groups are a great way to relax and get a break, have fun and make new friends with other young people in similar situations. We play games, share food, learn skills and discuss different topics relevant to you and your group.

Invites to school holiday activities for one year, these are a mixture of activities such as games, arts and crafts and sports. They are a brilliant way to make new friends, enjoy new experiences and have fun.
