At SYC we know that young people and their families are the experts. They know what will make their own lives easier, so we make sure everything we do is based on what they tell us. We also make sure that their views are heard, to help influence and improve other services that they access.
We do this through:

In 2022, we signed up to the Power of Youth Charter to show our dedication and commitment to giving young people a voice and involving them in decision-making across the organisation. You can read our commitments here.
We use all of the information we get directly from young people to inform our work with professionals, our strategic work and our research.

Our Action Group is a team of young people who have been involved in our service and now help shape the work we do at Sheffield Young Carers.
They speak up about what it’s like to be a young carer and a young person impacted by substance misuse in the family. They share their views to help improve services, raise awareness, and influence decision-makers. They make sure young carers are listened to and taken seriously.

In 2020, Sheffield Young Carers began hosting Young Carers National Voice (YCNV), a network of young carer organisations from across the UK. The network creates a collective voice for young carers who want to raise awareness and improve services for all young carers across the UK.
Over five years, YCNV brought together 31 organisations and supported over 500 young carers to share their experiences, develop resources, and speak directly to decision-makers. The group contributed to national campaigns, including calling on Ofsted to better recognise young carers in schools and sending a report to the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Young Carers.
From 2026, Carers Trust will take over hosting the network. Sheffield Young Carers will continue to be an active member, giving young carers in Sheffield the chance to help shape change at a national level.
I like coming to YCNV as I get to see other people who are young carers across the country, and it shows us that we're not the only ones.
