Thursday 26 January is Young Carers Awareness Day, a national day of recognition for the UK’s 700,000 young carers.
SYC is calling on the city to identify as many of Sheffield's hidden young carers as possible. As a small organisation with very limited resources we're only able to provide direct support to about 200 of Sheffield’s most vulnerable young carers each year. But we know there are thousands more who we simply can’t reach - many in desperate need of support.
By working closely with education, health and social care professionals and local community organisations we are determined to extend our reach – by equipping others with the skills and knowledge they need to support young carers in their own setting, whether that's a local community centre, school or a GP’s surgery.
To mark Young Carers Awareness Day, we're organising a number of activities, including the launch of our new e-newsletter (sign up here!) and an exciting African drumming workshop at The Sheffield College. Join us between 12 and 1pm at The Sheffield College (Hillsborough Campus), as Steve Rivers from Unbeatable Energy Ltd shows us how it's done!
