Richard's rowing challenge is an inspiration!

Earlier this month, Richard Campos, aged 70, rowed his heart out to raise more than £4,000 for five lucky charities.

'I was recovering from meningitis and sepsis and I decided that I wanted to get some of my fitness back'

On Saturday 21st May, at Graves Health and Sports Centre, Richard Campos took on a 100km #worldrecord row to raise money for five charities close to his heart: Antenatal Results & Choices, Huntington's Disease Association, LINKS Sports Trust, MND Association and us here at Sheffield Young Carers.

Richard shared why he chose to support SYC: ‘I first met Sheffield Young Carers when I called to see them about a funding opportunity. Whilst Katie, the funding director was making a drink, I read about the organisation and was profoundly affected by the effect it had on the children. The charity offers support to children and young people aged 8-25 who live in Sheffield and are young carers’.

This challenge was no mean feat, and after six hours of solid rowing, Richard had to stop.

What Richard has achieved is absolutely amazing and we are so proud of him! The grit and determination he has shown and his commitment to supporting the local community is astounding. He has raised more than £4,000 for the five charities, and SYC has also benefited from an incredible £5,000 donation made through Richard’s connection with West Riding Masonic Charities.

Thank you so much, Richard. As one of the young carers we support said, ‘thank you for putting other people first’.
