Could you push yourself out of your comfort zone to help SYC?
Taking on a challenge event is tough. The hours of training and dedication needed can be off-putting. If you are even able to consider taking part in an event to raise money for us however, we’ll be on hand to help!
We can’t tell you how much we appreciate everyone who takes on a challenge event for SYC: it really is a great way to support our work. Here are some upcoming challenge events that could be ideal if you’re thinking of getting involved but you’re not sure where to start. (Most of the events take place annually so if 2021 feel too soon, you can always aim for 2022!).
The Sheffield TEN10TEN - This year will be the 11th TEN10TEN multi-terrain 10K trail (a bit of a tongue twister!). Starting in Endcliffe Park, runners will twist and turn through the exciting course, on four different types of terrain: grass, pavements, road and woodlands. This is a great one for less experienced runners and those starting their running journey, as well as seasoned pros. There is also a 2.5K fun run for anyone aged 4 upwards, making this a great event for families of runners too! Date: 10 of October 2021
The Sheffield Half Marathon 2021: Perhaps the most well-known of all the challenge events we’ve listed here, the Sheffield Half is always an enjoyable day. For those entering, it’s just over 13 miles of running, with the chance to take in some of Sheffield’s and the Peak District’s best views along the way. Whether you choose to go it alone (some even do it in fancy dress!) or with a team of mates, the Sheffield Half Marathon is always an experience. Date: 26 of September 2021
The Rebrik Foundation Chesterfield 10K - For those aged 15 and above, this 10K run in Chesterfield is an event not to be missed. This run is a first for Chesterfield, plus there is a 1K fun run around Queen’s Park for those who may not feel up to the 10K distance. Like the TEN10TEN, there are ways for all family members of different ages to get involved to help support us! Date: 17 of October 2021
The Peak District Challenge 2021 - The Peak District Challenge gives keen walkers and runners the perfect chance to take in some stunning views whilst completing their challenge. There are lots of different categories you can enter too, ranging from a 10K night run to a 100K 24-hour challenge! These challenges are definitely suited to those with running and walking experience. Dates: 17/18 of September 2021
The Edale Skyline - 20 miles long and 1,200 metres of ascent, with an approximate ten-hour completion time. The Edale Skyline challenge is certainly a tough one, but along the way there will be stunning views, plus you’ll be led by an experienced and knowledgeable mountain leader the entire time. For an experience you’ll never forget, this is a great way to raise some money for SYC. Date: 18/19 of September 2021
Tough Mudder - If you are more of an obstacle course fan, then this is the perfect challenge event for you (if you don’t mind getting a little bit muddy, of course!). The Tough Mudder is a mixed running and obstacle course, either 10K or 5K long, which challenges endurance, strength and speed all in one. Tough Mudders take place every year throughout the summer up until the beginning of October. Unfortunately the Yorkshire event has already taken place but other venues are available. Visit their website for dates and venues.
Forest of Light Run, Sherwood Pines - This night-time running event is really unique. In a 3K looped circuit, the route will be lit up by a spectacular lighting display and runners will be able to complete as many laps as they want of the course before 10:30pm. There are prizes for those who complete the most laps in their category, as well as other activities for family and supporters to take part in. This course will be in Mansfield, with a head torch being a specific requirement for all entrants. Date: 24 of September 2021 *** UPDATE: Entries now closed for 2021 unfortunately - check back here for 2022! ***
The Carsington Water Half Marathon and 10K - Okay, this one may be a little bit in advance, but trust us, Carsington Water is an absolutely beautiful place to take on a challenge. The scenic route along the water makes for a great view - enough to encourage anyone to keep on going! What’s more, there will be prizes up for grabs from the event’s sponsor, Big Bobble Hats. What’s not to like?! Date: 26 of February 2022
The Great North Swim - For those of you who prefer to travel in water, rather than on foot, The Great North Swim is a great, reasonably local challenge event that our staff team has already signed up for! With different options depending on your swimming ability, as well as activities for family and friends to try out, this event really does have it all. This open water swimming event is hugely popular too, with roughly 10,000 entrants taking part. And there are plenty of staff on the day to keep you safe, just in case you encounter any problems during your swim. Dates: 10/11/12 of June 2022
The Great North SwimRun - And for those who love challenging themselves on foot and in the water, how about The Great North SwimRun? You can take on one of three gruelling courses, either on your own or with a partner, which include both swimming and running sections. The longest course clocks in at a mega 38.8km long! Not only that but good planning comes into play too, as you have to carry everything you need along with you - definitely not one for the faint hearted! Check out the website for more information and commonly asked questions, if you’re thinking of taking the plunge. Date: 11 June 2022
