Woohoo, the summer holidays are finally here! It has been another crazy year filled with tons of hard work and pressure for young carers and young people affected by alcohol or drug issues in their family, so SYC are delighted to be able to offer lots of different activities during the summer holidays.
The summer holidays are supposed to be six or seven weeks of relaxation, enjoyment and memory making for ALL young people, no matter what their situation might be. Our brilliant support workers have put together a superb summer schedule to ensure all of the young people that we’re working with get the opportunity to take a well-deserved break from their caring roles and their busy home lives during the holidays.
Week 1 kicks off with the chance for young people to create their own radio play through our ‘Storybomb’ workshops hosted by Hybrid3 recording studios. There will be photography sessions too, where young people will get the opportunity to master several different photography basics. Next up in Week 2, there will be zip-lining and climbing activities at Hesley Wood’s activity centre, which is definitely one not to be missed for those craving a thrill! In Week 3 there will be picnic days, with lots of creative arts and crafts activities to get stuck into: a great chance to socialise with other young carers and relax in the summer weather.
As the holidays continue, so too do the activities, with Week 4 being canoeing week! Victoria Quays will be where our 8-12s get the opportunity to canoe with a view, whilst those aged 12+ will be heading to Hesley Wood again, where not only will they be canoeing, but also testing out their raft-building abilities. In our final week, Week 5, every young person will be given an alpaca (don’t worry, not to keep!) that they can walk if they choose to, on a visit to Holly Hagg Community Farm. There will be lots of other farm-based activities during the visit too.
As you can tell, this summer with SYC is going to be epic! The next five weeks are packed with loads of relaxing, enjoyable and memory-making opportunities for all of the young people we support. A huge thank you must go to everyone who has enabled our plans to go ahead, especially our funders. Without their support, action-packed holiday activities like these just wouldn’t be possible. We will try to keep you posted on all of our activities, via social media and our website.
